Rooting Uprooted ZOOM COURSE

Unveiling the True Roots of Jazz Dance. Using the 2020 jazz dance documentary, Uprooted, as a jumping off point to further an understanding of the roots of the form, we will embark on a critical analysis of foundational people, forms, steps, stories, history, and contributions of the Black creatives and pioneers mentioned and overlooked by the film. We will allow for conversation surrounding many of the incomplete talking points in the film as well as work to correct misinformation and reveal the authentic forms of jazz dance, contrasting them with the codified, appropriated styles featured in the film and commonly taught today. Explore the continuum of jazz dance from the 1920s through the 1970s-80s, gaining a deeper understanding of its evolution and cultural significance. Purchase here!
